physiotherapist
The great thing about my work as a physiotherapist is that it is very varied. Every person who comes in with a complaint is different and has a specific story.
Interest in the functioning of the human body
The great thing about my work as a physiotherapist is that it is very varied. Every person who comes in with a complaint is different and has a specific story. I have always been interested in the human body and want to know exactly how everything works and fits together. After my studies, I started working as a physiotherapist in various clinical departments at the Academic Hospital in Maastricht. Here I came into contact with neurological and neurosurgical patients, among other things. There I discovered that working with people with more complex complaints suits me well. My strength lies in looking further into the impact of a complaint, whereby attention is also paid to dealing with it, especially in the case of a chronic condition. I try to give that little bit extra to make the treatment successful and to deliver tailor-made care.
The first appointment
First of all, in addition to the complaint, I also take stock of the patient’s wishes or goals. What does the patient expect from me as a practitioner? In addition, we discuss the specific complaint and its impact on activities. Together we set the goals, after which the plan is discussed so that it is clear what the treatment will consist of. Together with the person I am treating, I try to achieve the maximum possible, also in the case of a chronic complaint.
My specializations
My focus is mainly on explaining what causes or can maintain a complaint. Sometimes patients are sent from pillar to post, which makes them feel like they are not being taken seriously and that is very annoying. If environmental or personal factors play a role, this is taken into account during the treatment. In recent years, in addition to treating complaints of the musculoskeletal system, I have specialized in psychosomatic physiotherapy. Methods are used that are aimed at conscious movement and stepping off your autopilot during exertion or activities. I also treat many back and neck complaints. I recently started a one-year training course that focuses on specific techniques for loosening the joints, spine and pelvis.
My qualities
I am described as a patient, clear and transparent physiotherapist. I do not promise things that I cannot deliver and will honestly share my findings. If something is beyond my capabilities, I refer the patient to a colleague who I know can do more. This is something we always do in our organization in such a case and that makes us strong as a treatment team. We think it is important that the patient gets the right practitioner and receives the best possible treatment.
