The power of Pre-operative Physiotherapy for a faster recovery!

After surgery, you want to recover quickly. Some people know that physiotherapy after surgery can speed up the recovery process. But did you know that it is wise to start physiotherapy before your surgery? We call that pre-operative physiotherapy.

Very important because research shows that the fitter you go into surgery, the faster your recovery will be. And that makes the combination of pre-operative physiotherapy and post-operative physiotherapy (after your surgery) a very effective combination for the best possible recovery.

What is Pre-operative Physiotherapy?

Pre-operative physical therapy focuses on preparing your body for an upcoming surgery. This can be done through specific exercises that focus on strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, and increasing overall fitness.

Benefits of Preoperative Physiotherapy

  • Faster Recovery
Patients who undergo physical therapy prior to surgery often recover faster because their bodies are better prepared for the stress of surgery and rehabilitation afterward.
  • Fewer Complications
Improving your physical condition before surgery can reduce the risk of complications such as infections and blood clots.
  • Shorter Hospital Stays
Studies show that patients who undergo preoperative physical therapy often have shorter hospital stays.

For which operations is pre-operative physiotherapy usually used?

There are many types of operations that directly or indirectly affect the musculoskeletal system (muscles, joints, tendons, etc.). Here are a number of procedures where we can help you with pre-operative physiotherapy.

  • Orthopedic Operations
Interventions such as hip or knee prostheses, where restoration of freedom of movement and muscle strength is essential.
  • Cardiovascular surgery
To improve general condition and heart function, which can be crucial for recovery after cardiac surgery.
  • Gastrointestinal and Liver (MDL) Surgery
In operations on organs of the digestive system, where good physical condition can promote recovery.
  • Oncological interventions
Before and after cancer treatments to maintain or improve strength and endurance.
  • Abdominal and Thoracic Surgery
In procedures involving the abdominal or thoracic cavity, strengthening the abdominal and chest muscles before surgery can aid recovery.
  • Major Reconstructive or Plastic Surgery
Especially when these operations affect mobility or physical functioning.
  • Neurological and Spinal Surgery
To improve muscle function and prepare the body for any changes in mobility after surgery.

We always advise you to contact us if you are not sure whether your upcoming operation would benefit from pre-operative physiotherapy.

Our approach. Customization is central to pre-operative physiotherapy

Certain operations are common (think of hip operations) but your specific situation is unique. That requires customization. And so you can expect a customized pre-operative physiotherapy program at Cardo Healthcare in Veldhoven and Waalre, taking into account the specific operation and your individual needs.

What about reimbursement for preoperative physiotherapy?

In principle, pre-operative physiotherapy falls under normal physiotherapy treatments.
The reimbursement therefore depends on the coverage that your health insurance provides for physiotherapy (supplementary insurance). So check this with your insurance and of course we can tell you more about it.

I dreaded the massages. I mean, I’m just not into them. And still am, but when I could sit up straight at work again within two sessions… well, then you know what you’re doing it for.
