Gait Disorders

A gait disorder can be very limiting in your daily activities. It can hinder you from climbing stairs, walking long distances, or make you feel insecure when walking on uneven surfaces. In some cases, the risk of falling may increase, and there may even be regular falls.

The cause of gait disorders can be neurological, such as foot drop due to a herniated disc. However, poor circulation or a disorder of the vestibular system can also lead to disrupted walking patterns.

There are many different causes that may not always be obvious. Pelvic or back pain can disrupt the movement chain. Adjusting or compensating for pain can gradually lead to a gait disorder. Additionally, compensations can arise after ankle, knee, or hip surgeries, resulting in an altered walking pattern that can cause long-term limitations.

During the intake, a thorough assessment of the nature of the deviations will be conducted, and an appropriate treatment plan will be established. Your physiotherapist will start with condition-setting interventions (e.g., strength training) to gradually build up activities. Proper gait training will also be an integral part of the process.

In some cases of gait disorders, other disciplines such as occupational therapy or podiatry may be involved. A gait issue often requires a tailored approach, and therefore, we will consider all necessary options together.
